Zeal Optics team rider Shannan Yates wins 2010 Freeride World Tour at Squaw’s Legendary Tram Face

Squaw Valley, USA – March 1, 2010 – The third stage of the Freeride World Tour was held today Monday on the Silverado venue in Squaw Valley USA. With its playful terrain the riders put up a great show for the hundreds of cheering locals, pushing the limits with a ‘best of two runs’ format. The high point of the day was the women stepping up the game with a great level of riding, taking the same big cliff jumps as the men and creative line choices.

Popular Mechanics - Top Picks from the 2010 Ski and Snowboard Industry Trade Show

Snow is dumping across much of the United States this winter and the Vancouver Olympics are set to launch with American skiers and snowboarders enjoying unprecedented World Cup competitiveness. So it was an ideal time to check in at the Snowsports Industries America (SIA) annual trade show, which opened yesterday in Denver. The show includes more than 3000 exhibitors overflowing with gear aimed at retail buyers shopping for deliveries next fall. Out of that blizzard of equipment, here are five products and trends that piqued our interest.

Zeal Optics Transcend - Heads-Up Goggle Display

If you want a heads-up display to read off stats like altitude, speed and latitude and longitude, you could spend many millions on a fighter jet, many thousands on a luxury car, or $350 on a pair of goggles. The Zeal Transcend is one of those high-end, early-adopter toys that could have seemed annoyingly unnecessary in real life. In fact, it hit a sweet spot: undeniably superfluous yet completely cool. The goggles, built with technology produced by a company called Recon Instruments, incorporate an accelerometer, air pressure sensor, thermometer and SKYTRAQ 65 GPS chip. (This is one more bit of evidence that we’re entering a location-based future in which GPS chips are built into everything.) The data isn’t actually projected on the lens, thank goodness. It shows up on a tiny screen embedded in the lower right part of the frame. (If you’re far-sighted, this isn’t the product for you.) The data can be extracted via mini-USB, and will include information like maximum speed, how high the user jumped in the terrain park, and where a backcountry adventurer has wandered. The goggles more or less reproduce the functionality of lots of sports watches already on the market. And it may be that the display would be distracting in the mountains, as opposed to a convention center. But we want a pair anyway.

  • Zeal Optics is sponsoring the first parapelegic summit of kilimanjaro!

Posted on January 25th, 2010 admin No comments

We are headed to Africa to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania with two challenged athletes. Our goal is to raise awareness for individuals with physical challenges so they can participate and compete in the sports they love with portions of the proceeds to benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation. By providing opportunities and resources needed for active lifestyles, CAF enhances these individuals’ self-esteem, independence and quality of life.

In January of 2010, we start our journey from Los Angeles International Airport and head towards Tanzania, and we would like to invite all of you to follow along!

Here we will frequently be keeping you all up to date on our progress before, during, and after the climb.

    Keep checking back!

    Hi everyone!
We have arrived safely in Africa, after a 30 hour flight from Los Angeles, through Minneapolis with a four hour layover at Amsterdam. The approach into Kilimanjaro airport was a little rough, due to the winds that blow across the plain around Arusha and as it was dark when we landed, we didn’t really get to see much. Fortunately, all our luggage (17 bags, 2 wheelchairs, one extra set of Magic Wheels and the trusty poles, as well as a pile of hand luggage) arrived safely and we were met by the reps from Thomson Safaris who helped us clear customs quickly and expeditiously.

It took a little time to load the luggage and chairs onto the jeeps - think African safari jeeps that hold 8 people with the bags (and chairs) strapped to the roof (we’ll try and get some pictures up tomorrow) and then we set out on the final leg - a short drive to our accommodation at Rivertrees lodge. The temperature is high seventies and as we headed across the plain, you could make out the silhouette of Mount Meru (around 15,000 ft). No sight of Kilimanjaro yet!

Right now we are sitting at a late dinner in the open veranda restaurant at Rivertrees, which is really more luxurious that any of us had anticipated! The rooms each have their own unique character: Chris and Matt’s room have two trees growing through it; Erica and Tara’s has a plush raised bath tub; Zak and Phil’s room has a picture of a zebra, which Zak has just told me is his favorite animal; and Penny and Derek’s room has two mosquito-net-draped 4-poster beds.

Sleep might be hard tonight as everyone slept on the plane and we are all somewhat affected by the 11 hour time difference! But tomorrow we have a day to recover from the flight with a short hike and a little safari trip planned through Arusha National Park before our pre-climb briefing in the late afternoon. So we’re all heading to our respective rooms to try and get some sleep.

Talk more tomorrow. I can’t wait to get a glimpse of the mountain when we get up in the morning!

Zeal Optics’ Swap-It Deuce: Water-Friendly Eyewear

    Zeal Optics Swap-It Deuce

I live in a town between two lakes. It also happens to have the Sacramento River running smack dab though the middle of it, so needless to say I’ve lost more than my share of sunglasses to the water gods over the years.

So, apparently, have the people at Zeal Optics, because they’ve designed a pair of sunglasses that’ll take everything that a body of water can dish out.

Zeal has taken their passion for performance eyewear to new places with their Swap-It Deuce ($150). They’ve taken their super-clear ZB-13 polarized lenses and put them in a frame that features removable goggles to keep water from splashing in wearer’s eyes as well as a removable head strap to keep that from falling off your head in rough water.

The key work in that last paragraph is “removable”. The goggle liners and head strap can be taken off the frame so you can wear them on land without fear of ridicule, and in contrast to many performance frames that look bizarre anywhere but on a trail, these frames look pretty dang sharp.

What all this adds up to is a pair of sunglasses that will keep you comfortable and looking good anywhere you go.

  • Zeal Optics Maestro Review at 3luxe.com

Posted on January 6th, 2010 admin No comments

“3Luxe: Simply the best of everything!”

    Zeal Optics Maestro :

When you’re on a long peddling trip on a warm day, there’s nothing more annoying than your shades continually slipping down your nose as you start to sweat. It takes a hand off the handlebars unnecessarily and that’s never a good thing. The Zeal Optics Maestro cycling sunglasses eliminates that problem with hydro-philic silicon ear and nose pads that become stickier as you sweat. These “Best Of” cycling sunglasses deliver style, durability and great optics. The Maestro’s copper tints enhance depth and clarity, allowing you to go faster and harder in and out of glare and shadows. The big lenses follow the curvature of the eye and reach back for superior peripheral coverage. Protection from wind and sunlight is near absolute, and co-molded nylon and silicon temples segue into steel on both sides of the metal hinges which are spring-loaded to cradle your head securely. The Maestro’s fashion-forward sculpting of the matte nylon frames make them as street-worthy as they are sporty.
